Back pain may become noticeable after desk work, driving, lifting, training or ordinary everyday movement. An assessment is how we work out which of those matters for you.
The first appointment is an assessment. We are trying to understand where symptoms are felt, what makes them worse and how your back behaves under everyday load.
Depending on the assessment, rehabilitation may combine movement work, progressive strength, mobility and practical changes to how you load your back through the day. We explain the reasoning so you can carry it on outside the clinic.
Some back symptoms need medical review rather than physiotherapy first. If the assessment suggests that, we will say so and recommend the appropriate next step.
A scan is not routinely needed for low back pain. Assessment helps decide whether imaging would change management. Bring any reports you already have, but do not arrange imaging simply to prepare for a physiotherapy enquiry.
Back pain with new numbness around the genitals or bottom, trouble passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, or loss of feeling in one or both legs needs emergency medical assessment. Do not wait for a callback or routine physiotherapy appointment.
